Saint Bridget, mother and nun

Saint Bridget was canonized in 1391 by Boniface IX and is the patron saint of Sweden. In 1999, she was declared co-patroness of Europe by Saint John Paul II. She was born into an aristocratic family, accepted marriage at her father's request and founded a hospital together with her husband. After Ulf's death, she divested herself of her possessions and went to live in the Cistercian monastery of Alvastra. Her mission was to ask the Pope to return to Peter's tomb and her charitable works were decisive for peace in Europe. The central point of her faith experience was the Passion of Christ and the Virgin Mary.

Prayer to Saint Bridget

Saint Bridget, here I am prostrated at your feet, I ask for your intercession through the merits of the Passion, death and resurrection of Our Lord Jesus Christ.

Touch my heart so that, following your wonderful example, I may, each day more, adore the beloved Son of God the Father.

That by imitating your holiness, I may detach myself from earthly goods and affections, and may I follow the paths that were traced for me by the Creator.

Oh my Saint, I want to experience all the detachment you demonstrated, so that my heart may also be an adorer.

May my evangelical attitude be a source of abundant fruits on this pilgrimage, but if weakness befalls me, may I proclaim that your Grace is sufficient for me, Lord.

And may this be the source of my consolation!
