St. Rupert

Saint Rupert descended from the Rupertines, an important family that dominated the middle and upper Rhine region with the title of count. This family also gave rise to another Saint Robert (or Rupert) of Bingen, whose life was recorded by Saint Hildegard. The Rupertines were related to the Carolingians and had their activities centered in Worms. Saint Rupert received his monastic training from an Irish perspective.

Works in Life

In the year 700, he felt impelled by his masters and went to Bavaria, supported by Count Theodo of Bavaria. There he founded a church dedicated to Saint Peter near Lake Waller, 10 km from Salisburg. He later built a monastery near the Salzach River, close to the ancient Roman city of Juvavum. This monastery, dedicated to Saint Peter, is the oldest in Austria and is associated with the nucleus of Nova Salisburgo. He had the collaboration of twelve fellow countrymen, some of whom, like Cunialdo and Gislero, were honored as saints.

The Female Monastery

Near the monastery of Saint Peter, a female monastery was established and entrusted to the abbess Erentrude, niece of Saint Rupert. These ventures were fundamental to the emergence of Nova Salisburgo, and São Ruperto is recognized as its founder. He was responsible for the total conversion of Bavaria and Austria.

Saint Rupert: Model Monk, Founder and Bishop of Salzburg

Saint Rupert is recognized as the founder of the city of Salzburg, which means “city of salt”. Its symbol includes a salt shaker, due to its close connection with the origin and development of the city. In addition to being the founder, he was the first bishop from Salzburg. His influence was so significant that he is venerated not only in German-speaking regions, but also in Ireland, where he was originally from.

Easter

Saint Rupert died on March 27, 718, an Easter Sunday, after celebrating mass at Juvavum monastery. Before leaving, he made recommendations and prayer requests to his niece and spiritual sister, Erentrude. His relics are kept in the cathedral of Salzburg, built in the 17th century. He is the patron saint of the city and its salt mines.

Prayer

Lord, through the intercession of Saint Rupert, we ask for religious vocations, so that young people with vocations find support in their families and in society for the development of the Church. We also pray for all the clergy, that, in holiness, they may govern His people with wisdom. Amen.
