Saints Rodrigo and Solomon: Life and Death for Christ
The holy martyrs Rodrigo and Solomon are, without a doubt, the most characteristic of Córdoba, in Spain. Their mission was to bear witness to Christ with their Christian virtues and, eventually, with martyrdom. In 711, a Muslim army conquered the Christian Visigothic Kingdom and imposed Islamic law on the territory, making it known as Alandalus. It was in this context that Rodrigo and Salomão lived and gave testimony to Christ with their lives.
Rodrigo's life
Rodrigo was a priest and had two brothers, one Catholic and the other Muslim. Once, when Rodrigo tried to mediate a fight between them, he ended up being mistreated by both. When Rodrigo was still half fainted, the Muslim brother put him in a car and went out through the streets saying that Rodrigo had embraced the Islamic faith. After recovering, Rodrigo continued exercising his ministry, which caught the attention of Muslims, who judged him a traitor. Before the judges, Rodrigo declared: “I was born a Christian and I will die as a Christian” .
The story of Solomon
Little is known about Solomon, but before and after his arrest, he suffered greatly because of Christianity. His resistance resulted in his and Rodrigo's martyrdom, on March 13, 857. In prison, they transformed the space into an oratory and cultivated a deep friendship. Even under threat and questioning, they did not renounce their Christian faith. In the end, they were separated, but remained faithful to God. Sentenced to death, they embraced the crucifix and were beheaded.
The story of Rodrigo and Solomon is a great example of fidelity to God, even in the face of persecution and death. Their examples remain alive, challenging us to follow the path of Christ.
