Saint Timothy, Bishop of Ephesus

Saint Timothy was born in Lystra, near Tarsus. His mother was Jewish and raised him in the Hebrew religion, having had a great love for Holy Scripture since he was little. Throughout his life, he was marked by the evangelization of the apostle Saint Paul and also Saint John the Evangelist.

Saint Paul was touched by the testimony of Saint Timothy and chose him to be his traveling companion, as he was highly esteemed by the people of Lystra and Iconium. In one of his letters, Saint Paul addressed the saint saying: “ To Timothy, dearest son: grace, mercy, peace, from God the Father and Jesus Christ, Our Lord! ” ( II Timothy 1:2 ).

In this text, it is possible to note that Saint Timothy's evangelization was not only for him, but also for his family: “ When your tears come to mind, I feel a great desire to see you to fill me with joy. I confess the memory of your sincere faith, which was first that of your grandmother Loide and your mother, Eunice, and, I have no doubt, it lives in you too .” ( II Timothy 1,4-5 )

During his missionary travels, Saint Timothy crossed Asia Minor, went to Macedonia, Athens and Thessalonica, collaborating in the evangelization of Christians. For his dedication, he was named the first bishop of Ephesus, where he met and became a disciple of Our Lord, following in the footsteps of the Evangelist Saint John.

Furthermore, tradition tells us that, in the year 95, the saint suffered martyrdom, as he had been attacked by pagans resistant to the Good News of the Lord. Through his prayer and total surrender to Jesus Christ, Saint Timothy lived faith in his family and proposed it to everyone so that they could know God, who is peace.

His feast day is celebrated on the same day as Saint Titus.
