Saint Proto

The story of Saint Proto is a saga of faith and dedication that has stood the test of time. He was born in the Marches, in the diocese of Fermo, in 1245. Although his history is rooted in legends, his veneration is indisputable, with celebrations in different historical records and religious calendars.

Origins and Ascetic Life

Proto found his religious calling at a young age and, by the age of seven, was already immersed in prayer and fasting. His formative years took place in the Augustinian community of Castel Sant'Angelo, where his devotion and austerity stood out. Later, in 1274, he became a priest.

Inspiring Preaching

Saint Proto possessed an incomparable gift of persuasion. His optimistic preaching conveyed confidence in Divine Providence and captivated crowds. His life reflected his love for Christ, committing himself to the practice of Christian virtues, charity and service to those in need.

A Life of Penance and Care

His austerity was remarkable: he fasted on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays, in honor of the Virgin Mary. His compassion impelled him to care for those less fortunate. With acts of charity, Proto offered relief and comfort to the sick, injured and hungry.

Apostle of Confession

In 1275, due to poor health, he moved to the Convent of Tolentino, where his influence expanded. He became an apostle of the confessional, offering advice and absolution. His obedience, humility and modesty earned the respect of the brothers of the Order and everyone who sought him out.

Earthly Departure and Lasting Legacy

Saint Proto died on September 10, 1305. His memory lives on through his canonization by Pope Eugene IV in 1446. The resting place of his remains is in the church of S. Giovanni dei Fiorentini, where devotees seek inspiration in the life of sacrifice and compassion he led.
