Saint Porfirio, bishop

Saint Porfírio was born in Greece, into a wealthy family, however, at the age of 25, he decided to dedicate himself to austerity, solitude and penance in the Jordan River region. After contracting an illness, he moved to Jerusalem, being more moderate in his austerity. Despite his reality, he dedicated himself to visiting holy places daily.

In prayer, he decided to sell everything he had and give it to the poor, receiving the miraculous reward of healing for his physical ailments. He was later ordained a priest in 393, with the responsibility of caring for the relics on the tree where Jesus was crucified, known as Vera Cruz.

He was then ordained bishop of Gaza, a region of Palestine currently known as the Gaza Strip. As bishop, he dedicated himself to caring for the people and converting the pagans in the region. With the influence of Saint John Chrysostom, a document was promulgated that determined the destruction of pagan temples. In this way, Porfirio took the opportunity to humiliate the devil and repair the idolatrous place of worship, building a Catholic Church.

Thus, he ended his life dedicating himself to the restoration of faith and the repair of idolatries, passing away in 420. Throughout his life, Saint Porphyry was a sign of humility and search for God, often being blessed by miracles that generated astonishment and the conversion of the pagans.
