Origins of Saint Louis Maria de Montfort

Saint Louis Maria de Montfort, born in France in 1673, was the son of a large family. From an early age, he felt the desire to follow the priesthood and, thus, followed the path of studies. After being confirmed, he added the name Mary to his name, due to his devotion to Our Lady.

Marian Devotion of Saint Louis

Saint Louis Maria de Montfort was a great preacher, man of prayer, lover of the Holy Cross, the sick and the poor. He was also an evangelizer who preached the Holy Gospel and led people to live Jesus through the intercession and knowledge of Mary. As he himself stated: “ Whoever finds Mary will find Life [Jesus Christ] ”.

As a good slave of the Blessed Virgin, Saint Louis was not selfish and taught the faithful the path of perfectly uniting themselves with Jesus, which consisted of total and liberal consecration to Saint Mary. He made sacrifices for the salvation of souls and endured the various persecutions that the Evil One bestowed upon him.

Saint Louis Marie de Montfort was the one who wrote the “Treatise on True Devotion to the Blessed Virgin”, which still influences many of Mary's children today. The treaty was so influential that the late Pope John Paul II adopted as his motto the Totus Tuus, Mariae, that is, “I am all yours, O Mary”. Saint Louis Maria de Montfort died in 1716.
