Challenges and Ordering
Facing resistance from his father, João Maria persevered and, with the help of a parish priest, entered the Écully Seminary at the age of twenty. However, his lack of education led to difficulties in his studies of philosophy and theology. In 1815, he was ordained a priest, although initially he could not be a confessor. But, after three years, he obtained permission to fully exercise his apostolate.
Conversion of a City
Appointed vicar general in Ars-sur-Formans, a city marked by vices, João Maria transformed it with his example of charity and piety. The church was full and everyone wanted to confess to him. His reputation for holiness soon spread throughout Europe, attracting believers from different regions.
Patron of Parish Priests
Over 40 years of priesthood, João Maria Vianney left an inspiring legacy. He died in 1859, being canonized by Pope Pius XI in 1925 and proclaimed “patron saint of the world’s parish priests”.
