Saint Gonçalo de Lagos

São Gonçalo de Lagos was born around 1370, in the city of Lagos, in the Algarve, in Portugal. From a young age, at the age of 20, he was accepted into the convent of Graça, where he adopted the habit of Saint Augustine and, later, became a presbyter of the Order of Hermits.

A man dedicated to his faith

Throughout his life, São Gonçalo dedicated himself to a life of fasting and penance, at the same time as he dedicated himself to his studies and literature. He was a virtuous man, zealous in living the Religious Rule, and stood out as a preacher, becoming superior of some monasteries of his Order. Furthermore, he also had a special dedication to teaching children and the less educated the precepts of Christianity.

São Gonçalo’s love for study

From an early age, São Gonçalo demonstrated a great love for studying. Despite his unquestionable abilities, out of a spirit of humility, he refused to teach theology. However, as a priest he was highly appreciated both as a preacher and for his care of souls.

Example of faith and dedication

São Gonçalo de Lagos has always shown a great commitment to teaching the truths of faith to the most humble and ignorant people, especially children. He was elected prior several times and governed the largest and most important convents in the Portuguese province, such as Lisbon and Santarém, where he demonstrated a remarkable zeal for religious observance.

In addition to his spiritual qualities, São Gonçalo also had artistic skills, such as calligraphy, miniaturism and the composition of sacred songs. However, he never refused to undertake more menial tasks such as cook or porter if necessary. His spirit of piety was great and his ascetic sense very alive.

The death of São Gonçalo de Lagos

Before passing away, São Gonçalo continued to carry out his tireless work in the religious, social and pedagogical fields. He alleviated the suffering of the poor, who regarded him with great filial affection. The last monastery in which he lived was Torres Vedras, where he died on October 15, 1422. Before leaving, he exhorted his fellow convents to observe religious life and virtue.

The recognition of São Gonçalo

São Gonçalo de Lagos was considered the patron saint of Torres Vedras, but throughout Portugal he received great devotion. He was beatified by Pius VI in 1798 and his cult continues to this day.
