Saint Bernardino of Siena: a devout preacher and the symbol of Jesus, the Savior of Men

Born in Italy in 1380, Saint Bernardino de Sena was raised by his aunts, who taught him about devotion to Our Lady and Jesus Christ. He obtained a good education in the faith and its teachings, studied at the university of Seine and at the age of 22, he decided to abandon everything and join the Franciscan order.

A more radical experience of poverty

As a Franciscan friar, Saint Bernardine joined the observance movement, which constituted a more radical experience of poverty following the example of Saint Francis of Assisi. And he dedicated himself so concretely that he was generally responsible for the monasteries in which the friars who adhered to this observance within the order lived.

Precursor of content marketing

Well known for his work with the people and his incisive preaching, at a time when Italy was going through many problems, such as plagues and political divisions. Saint Bernardino preached about charity, peace, concord and justice and, with simplicity, spoke about great things, directly reaching the heart and meeting the needs of those people. It had great reach and reached us, as São Bernardino had a Stenographer with him, a person with the ability to transcribe easily and quickly. As a result, his exhortations and calls for conversion were able to reach countless people over the years. Becoming the patron saint of advertisers, he came to be considered the precursor of content marketing .

The symbol of Jesus Savior of Men

With his life of penance and poverty, he dedicated himself to the evangelization of the people, finding his strength in the Eucharist and being guided by the Holy Spirit. Wherever he went, he carried with him the sign JHS, meaning “Jesus Savior of Men” , and he instructed the faithful to turn to this symbol and remember that Jesus came to save them and, thus, by converting and repenting of their sins they could find salvation.

After years of apostolic dedication, Saint Bernardine fell ill and went to glory in 1444. Today, he intercedes for us with God the Father. In 1450 he was canonized by Pope Nicholas V. His tomb is located in the Franciscan church in Aquila .
