Saint Elizabeth
The biblical account of Saint Elizabeth is found in the first chapter of the Gospel of Saint Luke. According to the text, Elizabeth was married to a priest named Zechariah and they lived in the village of Ain-Karim, near Jerusalem. Both Zechariah and Elizabeth were described as righteous, blameless and faithful to the Lord’s commandments (Luke 1:5-7).
However, they faced great sadness in their lives, as Isabel was sterile and they were already old. At that time, not having children was considered a disgrace and even a divine punishment. Despite this, the couple remained firm in their faith and constantly sought the strength of prayer.
Zechariah’s encounter with the angel
On a certain day, while Zechariah was praying in the Temple, he was surprised by the visit of an angel of God. The angel announced that Elizabeth would conceive a son and that he would be called John. This son would play an important role in the history of salvation, preparing the way for the arrival of the Messiah.
Although pious, Zechariah asked the angel for proof and, as a result, remained mute until the birth of his son. On the other hand, Isabel received the news of her pregnancy through a visit from Maria, her cousin.
Mary’s visit to Elizabeth
Soon after receiving the angel’s visit, Mary hurriedly left to assist Elizabeth in preparing for the birth. When Mary arrived and greeted Elizabeth, the boy being born in Elizabeth’s womb became agitated and she was overcome by the Holy Spirit.
Elizabeth then made a proclamation about Mary and Jesus, praying the second part of the prayer known as Hail Mary. She recognized that the boy Mary carried in her womb was the Savior. The two remained together for about three months before Maria returned to her home.
The birth of John the Baptist and the return of Zechariah’s speech
On the eighth day after the boy’s birth, following the angel’s instructions, John was circumcised. It was at that moment that Zechariah’s tongue loosened and he spoke again. It was then confirmed that the son’s name would be John, who would have a special role in the history of salvation, guiding many Israelites back to the Lord.
After the birth of John, contact with the lives of Zacharias and Elizabeth is lost. However, it is safe to say that they remained faithful to God until the end of their lives. The Church recognizes the example of this couple for all the faithful, as both were righteous before God and fulfilled all of the Lord’s commandments and observances.
The meaning of the name Isabel and the prayer for infertile couples
The name Isabel originates from the Hebrew ‘Elisheba’ and means “God is my oath” or “my God promised”. Elizabeth became best known for being the mother of Saint John the Baptist. She is described in Scripture as a faithful and blameless woman in the eyes of God.
Although Elizabeth lived most of her life as a barren woman, this condition was temporary and part of God’s eternal plans. Therefore, many couples who struggle with infertility and are unable to have children turn to Saint Elizabeth and her husband Saint Zacharias in search of help and divine intercession.
May God, in the name of Jesus and through the intercession of Saint Zacharias and Saint Elizabeth, bless and console all couples facing difficulties in conceiving a child, bringing them hope and the possibility of a family.
