Saint Lydia

Origins and Conversion

The cult of Saint Lydia is an ancient tradition of the Church, and she has a unique importance in the history of Christianity in Europe. His home was the place where Saint Paul founded the first church on the European continent. Originally from Asian Greece, Lydia settled in Philippi, a port on the Aegean Sea, for her trade.

It was in Philippi that Lydia had a remarkable encounter with the apostles Silas, Timothy, Luke and Paul in the year 55. Saint Luke narrates this conversion in the Acts of the Apostles: “In Philippi, which is the chief city of Macedonia, a Roman colony, in the we detained for a few days. On Saturday, we went out to the river, where we thought there was a place for prayer. Then we sat down and spoke to the women who had gathered. A woman named Lídia, from the city of Thyatira, a purple seller and God-fearing, listened to us. The Lord opened his heart to heed the things Paul said” (Acts 16:12-14). Lídia's faith and generosity led her to invite the apostles to stay in her home.

The First Church Founded by Saint Paul in Europe

Lídia's hospitable gesture became a historic landmark for Christianity in Europe. Lídia's house then became the place where São Paulo founded the first church on the continent, paving the way for the spread of the Christian faith throughout the region.

Lydia, in addition to being an ardent disciple of Paul, was also an influential and wealthy businesswoman, serving as a merchant of purple, a precious dye used in fine fabrics. Her social position and financial resources helped her evangelize other inhabitants of Philippi and support the spread of the Christian faith.

The name of Saint Lydia was included in the Roman Martyrology by Cardinal Caesar Baronius in 1607, when he revised the list of saints.

The story of Saint Lydia highlights her importance as an essential link in the history of European Christianity, as her home became the cradle of the first Christian community on the continent, a living proof of the strength of the gospel and the transforming power of faith.
