Fruits of the Holy Spirit

In addition to the seven gifts that the Holy Spirit pours upon us, He also grants us 12 fruits that are extremely important for the Christian life. Let’s understand each of these fruits and how they manifest themselves in our lives:

The fruits of the Holy Spirit are:

1. Charity: Charity is the love for God above all things and for others because of God. It is the greatest of gifts, as it transcends death and is perpetuated in Heaven. Charity is eternal, as the biblical passage tells us: “Faith and hope will disappear, but love will never disappear” (1 Corinthians 13:8).
2. Joy: This fruit is revealed through inner emotions of deep spiritual satisfaction that the Holy Spirit pours into our hearts and souls. It is an indescribable and inexpressible joy, coming from the Holy Spirit himself.
3. Peace: This is not a mere external sensation, but rather the inner smoothness that Jesus promised to His apostles: “Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives, but as I give” (John 14:27). This peace is found in Jesus, the very peace and tranquility of the soul.
4. Patience: Patience is essential for the Christian to persevere in faith and endure adversity, illness, setbacks and persecution. The patient Christian remains firm and unshakable, accepting challenges without losing calm, knowing that, even in evil, good can emerge.
5. Kindness: It is the genuine and sincere desire to do good to others, disinterestedly, without expecting anything in return. The person who lives true kindness is willing to do good, as love is manifested through benevolent acts.
6. Kindness: Starting from kindness, kindness goes beyond obligation and justice, as it translates into doing even more than what is merely necessary.
7. Longsuffering: Related to magnanimity, it is the soul’s willingness to wait without bitterness, even in the face of the most challenging difficulties. The long-suffering Christian perseveres in the ways of God, regardless of adversity.
8. Meekness: Associated with humility and patience, meekness is an invitation from Jesus to imitate Him. It goes against anger and hatred, reflecting the sweetness and humility of the Sacred Heart of Jesus.
9. Faith: In addition to being one of the gifts of the Holy Spirit, faith is also one of the theological virtues. It is a fundamental gift for the Christian journey, keeping the individual firm and persevering even in the face of challenges. Faith needs to be fed by prayer and contact with God.
10. Modesty: This is the modesty that accompanies the Christian, aware that God lives within him. It is respect for one’s own body as a temple of the Holy Spirit, expressed in care for one’s appearance, not out of vanity, but out of self-respect and human dignity.
11. Continence: This fruit makes the human being balanced, allowing control of appetites for physical pleasures, demonstrating control over oneself in relation to the body’s instincts.
12. Chastity: Refers to maintaining the purity of the body and soul, experiencing with joy and fullness the call to maintain chastity in words, actions, thoughts and desires. It goes beyond abstinence, rising above sexual instincts.

The 12 fruits of the Holy Spirit are precious virtues that, when cultivated, bring countless benefits to our spiritual life. As we embrace these fruits, we draw closer to God, improving our character and witnessing His love and grace in the world around us.
